Transformers: Generations: Titans Return Chaos on Velocitron Box Set (Rodimus Prime, Fastclash, Laser Prime, Nautica, Quickswitch)

There are a few things I need to say about the Titans Return line.

First off, the trading cards.  Hasbro made a big deal that they were doing real trading cards and not just a picture with no meaningful back.  I guess they tried, but in the then end, they failed miserably.  The cards suck.  There are only four ratings instead of the eight that nearly all other tech specs have had for 30 years (when we’ve actually had tech specs).  There is no quote or function, and the only bio is a couple lines on the back of the package, they didn’t even bother to put it on the card.  Hasbro fails again.  What else is new?

Secondly, what the fuck is it with Hasbro that they need to focus on only one theme at a time?  Why are we getting Targetmasters and Powermasters as Headmasters?  It makes no sense.  Worse yet, the two Targetmaster converts, Blurr and Scourge, both have awful paint jobs (or I should say, barely any paint jobs at all).  They put all the work into the real Headmasters and just mailed it in on the Targetmasters that they shouldn’t have been doing in the first place.  As usual, they half ass everything, just like with Combiner Wars, where they ended the line without doing Terrorcons, Predacons, Seacons, Monster Pretenders, G2 Protectobots, and G2 Constructicons (in both colors).  I mean, they still could do those as box sets next year, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Thirdly, the Titan Masters.  Why can’t they be consistent?  Apeface, Brawn, Nightbeat, and Terri-Bull are named for the actual characters they are the heads for instead of the actual heads they represent.  Clobber and Skytread could theoretically be the Headmasters for Grimlock and Flywheels.  This makes no sense.  Pick one way of doing it.  It would make far more sense to name them for the Headmaster and not the character they partner with, as we are only getting the Headmaster.  Related to that, it really sucks that we aren’t going to get any real versions of the Headmaster Juniors or Headmaster Horrorcons.

Finally, the Headmasters are freaking tiny.  G1 Headmasters were way better than these, and had the ratings meter on the chest gimmick that they didn’t even try to reproduce.  Another thing that sucks is that the heads of the Headmasters are articulated.  This makes it so that the larger robot heads are articulated, but also makes it hard when plugging them in to Titan Masters vehicles.  G1 Headmasters were so much better, but that’s true of most G1 toys.

Anyway, on to the review.

Rodimus Prime

When Hasbro said that the “fifth figure” was a Titan Master, I assumed that Titan Master would include a vehicle.  Of course, it doesn’t.  So, we have a random Rodimus Prime head with no body and no vehicle.  But wait, there’s more!  His face is die cast metal!  Who gives a shit.  If they had put die cast metal parts onto one of the toys in the set, even if it was Fastclash, that would have been a nice touch.  But making the face of the head that has no body or vehicle die cast is a little stupid.

Fastclash

According to Hasbro the clones are larger than Legends but smaller than Deluxes.  They seem pretty much Legends size to me, or at least Fastclash does.  Like most of the Legends, Fastlane has no gun.  This is really unfortunate.  It would be a much better figure if he had the twin guns like the G1.  That said, he looks very much like the G1 in both modes.  They did a nice job on him.  I knew they would have to change the name, which is unfortunate.  Fastclash isn’t a bad name.

Laser Prime & Nameless Titan Master

Read my review of the original version of this mold here.  They did an amazing job painting him like Generation 2 Laser Optimus Prime.  Unfortunately, as they usually do, Hasbro screwed up the details.  The toy’s actual name is “Laser Prime”, not “Laser Optimus Prime”.  This change wouldn’t be a major problem for me, if not for the fact that he has “Optimus Prime” written write across his chest and on the sides of his vehicle mode.  I mean, he is literally wearing the wrong damn name.  To make matters worse, they didn’t even give his Titan Master a name.  How stupid is Hasbro to release toys with no name?  If they didn’t want to give their Titan Masters names, then don’t make them Titan Masters (which they should not have done anyway).  This is true of Nautica and Quickswitch as well.

Nautica & Nameless Titan Master

Read my review of the previous versions of this mold here, here, and here.  Nautica is an IDW character, so she is meaningless to me.  That said, she looks pretty awesome.  The paint job looks great in both modes.  Her wings are removable.  They added new ports for them to connect into to rather than making them part of her arm.  Not sure why they went that way unless they are planning another version of this mold with a different set of wings.  I’m sure there are a few more they could make from this one.  I really like her head sculpt.  It’s very detailed.

Quickswitch & Nameless Titan Master

You have to read my review of Six Shot.  Quickswitch has all the significant flaws of Six Shot with a few more added for good measure.  The paint job looks the part of Quickswitch, but they failed to paint his jet cockpit windows.  That’s minor, but annoying.  The main flaw is his head sculpt.  They gave him a new face sculpt on the Titan Master, but they failed to remold the helmet to make him really look like Quickswitch.  I didn’t think they would, but what really pisses me off is that the box shows him with a completely new head sculpt.  They seem to have taken a page out of Fun Pub’s playbook showing a really great mockup while releasing a piece of crap.  What’s worse, they released the official photos showing the new head sculpt after Toy Fair, even though they showed the toy at Toy Fair without it.  They could have altered the official photos to be accurate, but didn’t.  I don’t hate the idea of repainting Six Shot into Quickswitch.  We would never get a six changing Quickswitch otherwise, but given that we are getting a Japanese exclusive character Metalhawk in the other box set, they really should have gone with Great Shot.  I will cross my fingers that they do Great Shot in Japan, and maybe even give him a real accurate head.

Overall: Nautica is a great toy, and probably the best in the set.  That’s sad considering she’s a nothing IDW character.  The naming flaw aside, Laser Prime is great too.  Quickswitch is based on a toy with numerous flaws and adds even more, which is truly maddening, but again, it’s not awful.  The set is probably worth $100, but it doesn’t feel like it, not with all the flaws.  But hey, we got a disembodied Rodimus Prime head made partially of die cast metal.  Why can’t Hasbro get their shit together and stop screw up the simple details, like the names of the Titan Masters?  The world may never know.

Thanks for reading!
